Are you throwing away $500!?

Imagine you have $500 in your pocket. What could you do with that money? Would you throw it away? Well, this is what is exactly about to happen in a few days. You will be throwing away up to $500.

“Wait, wait, wait, how am I throwing away up to $500?” By not having your team registered on Breakout for the winter hockey season! Teams that are registered in the month of May, will get extra 30 days to receive that Early Bird credit. Returning Team and Early Bird credits can add up to $500.

The best part is you don’t even need to pay anything to get the extension. Just let your fingers do the work, a couple of taps on your phone screen or the keyboard and you can easily join the winter hockey season on Breakout. It will literally take 1 minute of your day to do it, but will give you 30 extra days to bring your team invoice to zero.

But you say: “Ah I don’t know, the team might not go this winter, I don’t know if I have enough players …” or something similar. We get it, being a GM is a tough business, always be recruiting, right? (have you heard of the secret FreeAgent Facebook group where you can pick up players for the season, that is only available to NCHL GMs?)

This is why if the team does not go, simply leave the winter season or delete the team on Breakout, no sweat off your back. What is the downside? That is right, there is none.

So go online or on your app right now, before you forget, and join the Winter 2019-20 Season on Breakout with your existing team, or make a new one. Then pat yourself on the back for making a smart decision!

By the way if you already registered your team for the winter hockey season, you are awesome and we thank you! Welcome back to the NCHL – A Better Way to Play!

P.S. Teams that register by midnight (MST) May 31st, 2019 will get an Early Bird credit extension until end of day August 1st, 2019.

Lets play hockey, because, the alternative is unthinkable!

Bringing Your Team Invoice To Zero

We always talk about bringing your team invoice to zero and how important that is for making sure you receive your credits. But what does it exactly mean? Lets have a look at some examples.

When you first register the team on Breakout or join the next season in the NCHL and then create a team invoice it will show two types of balances on it. Current balance and future balance. Balances can be negative, zero, or positive. Negative balance means you have a credit because your players paid more than needed, zero means your team is paid up and positive balance (denoted in red) means the team still owes for the season.

Current Balance = Team Fees – All Payments Received To Date

Current balance is pretty simple, this is what is owed by the team after all player payments actually received by the league have been subtracted from the total of the team fee including tax, minus any credits, plus any charges added. Charges can be added for late fees, but also for things like refunding a player that has left the team because we need to account for that payment. Credits can be added to the team invoice because you had an over payment from a previous season, or if a payment was made outside of Breakout, to reflect the current state of team payments.

Future Balance = Team Fees – All Payments Received To Date & To Be Received In The Future

Future balance is a bit more tricky, but it follows the same logic. The difference is, you may have players who have signed up for payments, (two or monthly payments), and that money will be coming off their credit cards in the future. We count this money as if it was already paid towards the team fees to calculate the future balance. So for example if you have a player who was assigned $600 and chose six monthly payments of $100, we would reduce the future balance by the full $600 instead of just the $100 made as the first payment.

View From Breakout’s Perspective

Here is what it looks like on Breakout. One invoice has a positive future and current balances, which means the team still owes money and the other shows a negative current and future balance. The second team is fully paid up  and has an overpayment (based on the current balance figure).

The overpayment can go towards their next season, remain on account or be refunded to you as the team GM. The league of course can not refund anything above the current balance if it is negative, simply because the future payments have not yet been received.

This invoice shows a positive current and future balance – the team still owes fees.

This invoice shows a negative current and future balance – the team has a credit that can be applied to the next season, remain on account or be refunded to the team GM provided all future payments have been actually received by the league. In the end current balance should equal future balance once all payment have been collected from players. The league can’t issue a refund for money that is yet to be received.

So if your future balance is at zero or is a negative number by the credit deadlines listed here, your team will be eligible to receive the credits based on the schedule plan you selected. Some plans do not have credits.

15 Days Left To Register Your Hockey Team For Winter Season

Winter is coming. And we are hard at work. Getting ready to start the hockey season on the right foot and on time. As of today, there are only 15 days before team winter hockey registration closes. After August 1st, 2018 we will not be able to accept any more teams for winter. This means you need to set up the team on Breakout today, but you don’t have to have the full team fees paid yet. Just the deposit. Which is super simple, it is your own fees (after all you will be playing, no?) and 2-3 other players paid in full.

By the way if you already paid your team deposit, this you can see on your team invoice on Breakout, you are good! And since you are so organized (which we love) consider starting a club team for winter.

Yes. It is hard to imagine. But winter hockey season will be starting soon. It all starts right after the Labor Day weekend. Or precisely in 50 days from today, which is not much time. Not much time at all, to finalize ice bookings, build the master hockey schedule for Calgary, Edmonton, Grande Prairie and Richmond. To figure out parity and placement for hundreds of hockey teams playing in the NCHL this winter. And there are team season schedules to build, select and publish. Lots of work. So if you have yet to register your team, please do it today! This will help a lot with speeding up the process of publishing your schedule for the whole season on time.

Each season we try to do our best to build and release the master hockey schedule on time. If there is one thing wrong in the information we have received from your team it delays the release of the schedule for everyone. So if you are a division 10 team, but chose division 1 by accident on Breakout, the winter hockey might as well be a write off if you had to play in div 1. We want to avoid this case as much as you do. Imagine if more than one team does this, well it piles up and it takes longer and longer to figure out the whole schedule for the rest of the year. The schedule is now late! We want to avoid this and publish it on time. You can help. Please make sure your information is completely accurate on Breakout for your team settings.

That all being said, there is still plenty of time to organize a team. In fact most of your players or potential players may not be thinking about hockey yet. For them 50 days is a long time and we can appreciate that. So what is the best course of action for a GM stuck between the rock of time and a hard place of needing to make a decision? Ask yourself this. Are you better off playing hockey this winter or not?

Do a quick survey of your teammates. If you have 9 other solid yeses you are well on your way and your hockey team will happen at a 90% certainty. We know this from experience, it is a question of confidence. If no one believes a team is a go it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. People loose confidence and it all unravels. On the other hand if your teammates believe that your hockey team will happen they are much more likely to say yes and sign up to play with you.

Try this. Set up the team on Breakout, join the winter 2018-19 hockey season and set up the team invoice. We recommend 15-18 players on your paid roster. Once the team invoice is ready, add your players to it. Pay your own team fees, this part is easy, right? Now get 2-3 other players to do the same and presto the team is happening!

By the way, we are not here to make people playing with us. We want your hockey experience to be exceptional, so if you get to a point where the team is just not happening and you paid the deposit, we will work with you. Even though the deadline for deposit refunds is 45 days before the start of the season, we review each situation on a case by case basis. And can easily refund your deposit if you were not able to get beyond signing up those first 2-3 players. We just don’t want teams who have committed to us and paid to pull out last minute, this really screws up the schedule for everyone else. Time is needed to adjust in a case like this.

Most of this info is not very relevant to you as a player. But there is one thing that is. You can help your team GM ensure the team is happening for winter. It is simple. Pay your own fees once you are invited to sign up on Breakout. And, you have plenty of choices for payment. You can do one, two or monthly payments and as of the time of this writing you can split your season fees into 6 payments. Ok, there is one more thing you can do to help your team GM. Every rec hockey team picks up 1-2 new players each season to round out the roster. If your team is looking for more players, which is usually the case, see if you can help with getting a friend on your team! Ask the GM first though.

P.S. If you already registered your hockey team and paid your deposit for winter, you are awesome! We thank you! Please keep up the good work and get all your players paid up in full or signed up on payments as soon as possible!

Winter Ice Hockey League and Team Fees

Hard to imagine, isn’t it? June is nearly over, winter hockey is less than 3 month away. Kids are now being signed up for hockey in their community. Soon the smell of hockey will be in the air, and we are hard at work securing ice times for the winter season.

Each year we try our very hardest to secure the best possible ice times by pleading with all our existing suppliers that adults deserve to play hockey too! Some times better ice times do come up. But, we would not know this until we get a little closer to the start of the season. And we are sure you, like everyone else would want to play at better times. So let us share a little secret of how you may be able to do it in the winter.

As you already know, there are limited schedule packages. One was so limited it sold within minutes of opening winter registration. Just because you chose a schedule package it does not mean you are going to get it. Why? Because we sort out who gets what in the most fair way possible. First come first serve basis. If you are on the ball you get to reap the rewards of better schedules in the winter!

The secret is getting your deposit in before anyone else does. The sooner we have received your deposit the higher your team is on the list, not only securing (only if you were quick enough) you will get the package you want, but also getting a better selection of the schedules available! There is one more secret somewhere else in this message, so read on.

We know what your are thinking, “I haven’t yet registered the team so I must have missed out on all this”. Not exactly right. First, it all depends on other teams, how fast did they pay their deposit? If they signed up for a package but were tardy with the deposit they may not be getting the schedule option they want, but you on the other hand might! Secondly, even if you did not get the deposit fast enough or were not able to pick your first choice of package it is still important to register the team and pay the deposit as quickly as possible.

Why? It is simple. Even with other package options you get choices, and these choices are rapidly diminishing with team registering and paying their deposit every day! So in other words if you register at the very end, you get what is left and with the shortage of ice times this season (some arenas out of order like Fairview in Calgary), what is left is not that good. Don’t be last!

Lets make things easy. For the next 12 days until the end of June we are slashing the deposit amount needed. Originally the deposit for winter was $2,500, but until June 30th, 2018 at 11:59:59PM (Midnight) PST you can pay half the deposit ($1250) and we will immediately insert your team in the deposit order! Does this mean you have to reach into your pocket and pay us $1250? Hell no! All you have to do is pay your own league fees and get one maybe two more players on your team to do the same. Once your invoice payments hit $1,250 you are good to go!

By the way if you were organized and already have more than $1250 paid, you don’t need to do anything else! We will slot you into the deposit order based on when you reached the required deposit amount. You do not lose your spot in line.

Now, you know about the deposit. You know what it means to be in the deposit order and you know how much the deposit needs to be ($1,250). You also know that you do not need to pay it on your own, rather you just need to get your players to pay their own fees. Lets talk about how you can start collecting team fees. It is super simple, with the help of Breakout you can add players to the new winter team invoice. Your players can then go in and pay their fees choosing one, two or monthly payments (these are interest free right now – but they won’t be for long).

You can see the video and read more about it here, but these are the steps for existing teams.
